Red Ribbon Week Begins on October 22, 2007

The Red Ribbon is more than just a ribbon.  It is a symbol of awareness, a sign that we choose to strive for drug-free lives.  It is a powerful educational tool that should be utilized not only one week in October, but throughout the year.  By wearing a red ribbon and saying no to drugs, we can make a difference and prevent future tragedies.

The Red Ribbon Week started in 1985 when drug traffickers murdered Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camarena who was investigating a major drug smuggling ring in Mexico. Agent Camarena was committed to getting rid of drugs and ended up losing his life in this fight.

In response to his death, angered parents across the country began wearing Red Ribbons to symbolize their commitment toward the creation of a drug free America.  In 1988 Congress officially proclaimed the first National Red Ribbon Week.  Since then, it has become larger and stronger, reaching the lives of millions of Americans.

Wearing the Red Ribbon symbolizes your support for being drug free.
