Step Five: Drug Testing

The last step of a comprehensive program is drug testing.  We offer only the highest level of testing available today as a third-party administrator and tailor each workplace program to the clients needs.  Anything less than a Gold Standard Program exposes a company to needless liability. It is important to have the previous steps in place before implementing the drug testing program.  The previous steps give your company support, credibility, and strength when considering a drug testing program.

Getting Started

The following is a list of the requirements that your testing program must meet:

  • Statutory or regulatory requirements
  • Disability discrimination provisions
  • Collective bargaining agreements
  • Any other requirements in effect

You will need to make a number of decisions about how your program will be set up and operate.  By asking yourself the following questions you can get started quite easily. We can help you make these decisions.

Who will you test?

(applicants, all employees, or only employees in safety sensitive positions)

When will you test?

(pre-employment, randomly, after all accidents, reasonable suspicion, after unacceptable behavior, or as part of a physical examination)

What drugs will you test for?

(only marijuana and cocaine, all illegal drugs, alcohol, or prescription drugs that may affect work performance)

Our Gold Standard Program tests for the five common illicit drugs, plus alcohol.  ARE YOU A DOT EMPLOYER?

How frequently will you test?

(weekly, monthly, once a year)

What will you do if an applicant tests positive?

(refuse hiring, tell applicant why you are not hiring them, all applicants to be retested, allow the applicant to reapply after 6 months)  How about random testing?  Will you work with a past employee who tests postive, or will you have a no tolerance policy? We can help the employer decide what will work best for them.

What will you do if an employee tests positive?

(fire them, refer them to counseling and treatment after 1st positive test but fire after 2nd, allow employees more than one chance to become drug-free before firing)  We can help you decide what's best for your company.

What tests and procedures will you use?

(who will collect specimens, will you confirm tests, what laboratory will you use, will you use a medical review officer, how will you protect employee privacy and confidentiality)  As a third party administrator, our Gold Standard Program handles all these issues for you.

A drug testing policy must follow state and federal guidelines. We can help you write a policy customized to fit your needs, that is fair, accurate, and legally defendable.  Remember that drug testing should be used as only part of a comprehensive DrugFree Workplace program.
