Step One: A Clear and Comprehensive Policy

This all-important step outlines where you stand, what you expect for your employees, and what action will be take if this policy is violated.  This step also allows everyone to know that you are a DrugFree workplace and that you are pursuing a DrugFree culture. 

DrugFree Idaho creates your policy and considers everyone who will be affected by it.  We keep in mind that your policy will be customized for your own business needs. 

What your Policy Should Do

  • Explain that drug and alcohol use on the job, or that affects job performance, is not permitted.
  • Explain why the policy has been established. (workplace safety, worker health, product quality, productivity, public liability, etc.)
  • Explain what will happen if the policy is violated.

Additional Points You May Want to Consider

  • Alcohol use at company-sponsored activities
  • Your position on drug testing and the consequences of positive tests
  • Responsibility of employees with substance abuse problems to seek and complete treatment
  • Helpful Company or Community resources available
  • Concern for employee family members abusing substances
  • Employee assistance program participation is confidential and will not affect or jeopardize employment or advancement

Once Your Policy is Written

DrugFree Idaho helps you to thoroughly explain the policy to your employees.  Having employees sign that they received the policy is also recommended.  Then apply the policy fairly and consistently with all employees.
