DrugFree Workplace Overview

Together We Can Make A Difference

“If I had employees on drugs, I’d know about it.”

This is one of the more common myths about alcohol and other drug use in the workplace.  The reality is 7 out of 10 drug users are working in someone’s business.  Additionally, 1 out of 4 employees has a substance abuse problem or a family member who struggles with a substance abuse problem.

Substance abuse is everyone’s business. If your organization does not have a drug-free workplace program, chances are good that a substance abuser works for you. The impact on your organization – in terms of your bottom line and employee safety – can be devastating.

Drugfree Idaho, Inc., a statewide non-profit organization, works to create a drug-free culture within workplaces, schools and communities.  We can help you create a positive, drug-free work environment that attracts and retains quality workers. DrugFree Idaho, Inc. does all the work to create a customized drug-free workplace program that can decrease your organization’s medical claims, job-related accidents, and employee absences, while increasing employee productivity and morale.

Our goal is to raise awareness, change behavior, and inspire action to prevent substance abuse.

If you have any questions regarding our program, then please feel free to give us a call at (208) 570-6404.

How Drug Abuse Affects the Workplace: Statistics

Employee substance abuse can create safety hazards for employers, co-workers and the public. There are also the costs of lost business opportunities arising from missed deadlines, diminished product quality, and damaged business reputation. Look at these sobering statistics:

  • Employee absenteeism - Problem drinkers are absent from work four to eight times more often than normal. Drug users are absent from work an average of five days per month due to substance abuse.
  • Less productivity - When they do show up, substance abusers are 33% less productive and cost their employers $7,000 annually.
  • Workplace accidents - Drug using employees are four times more likely to be involved in workplace accidents and five times more likely to file a workers' compensation claim.
  • Industrial fatalities – Up to 40% of industrial fatalities and 47% of industrial injuries can be linked to alcohol abuse.
  • Higher workers compensation costs – According to the National Council on Compensation Insurance, as much as 38% to 50% of all workers' compensation claims are related to substance abuse.
  • Higher medical costs - Substance abusers are three times more likely to use medical benefits than other employees.
  • Workplace theft – 80% of drug users steal from their workplaces to support their habits.
  • Workplace violence - Substance abuse is the third leading cause of workplace violence.

State Insurance Fund Premium Credit Programs

Idaho Code section 72-1716 allows insurance companies to grant premium credit to employers who have a qualifying alcohol and drug-free program.  The premium credit is applied at the year-end audit.  The Fund grants a 5% discount to qualified programs.

If you have an alcohol and drug-free workplace program, DrugFree Idaho, Inc. can assist you in providing a written statement, as well as all required documentation, to the State Insurance Fund indicating that your program complies with Idaho Code sections 72-1701 through 72-1715.

Since the program began in 2000, thousands of dollars in premium discounts have been issued to employers who joined DrugFree Idaho, Inc.

The purpose of the credit is to reduce the effect of drugs and alcohol in the workplace, The State Insurance Fund also requires that your program:

  • Be proactive as opposed to reactive.
  • Include 100% of your employees covered by the workers compensation policy in the testing program.

  • Have written documentation of how testing is accomplished.
