A Drug-Free Community Starts with Our Children

The classes described below include information on signs and symptoms of use, trends, promoting refusal skills for youth and community resources. The classes are free to the public and take place primarily in schools.

Schools

DFI offers educational classes for elementary students (Parents and Youth Against Drug Abuse) and middle school students (Project Alert).
Educating children and teens about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse is an essential mission for the coalition.

PAYADA

DFI sponsors free PAYADA education classes for elementary school students and their parents. These classes are taught as a combined effort between elementary School Resource Officers and school counselors.

The curriculum includes:

  • signs and symptoms of substance abuse
  • general information about a variety of drugs
  • current trends
  • developing good communication skills
  • promoting refusal skills for youth
  • community resources

Project Alert

Project Alert is a drug prevention curriculum for middle school youth ages 11 to14, typically offered during health class and taught by an specifically trained instructor.  The main objectives of the program are to educate the middle school students to:
Project Alert

  • Develop reasons not to use drugs
  • Identifying signs of peer pressure
  • Learn how to manage and refuse peer pressure
  • Understand that most people do not use drugs
  • Recognize the benefits of resisting drugs

The highly participatory curriculum makes extensive use of questions-and-answer techniques, small-group exercises, role modeling, and repeated skills practice.

Project Alert has been demonstrated effective with all ethnic groups and in both rural and metropolitan communities.
