This program was created to address underage and binge drinking. It was designed to help parents have a meaningful discussion with their teens and develop policies that keep kids safe. It is also intended to spark community dialogue while bringing awareness to the problem of substance abuse as well as inviting the community together to explore solutions.
Social and community change is required to reduce the problems associated with underage drinking an drug use. Youth involvement in community prevention efforts is vital. Increasing parental involvement and understanding issues facing their teens is also vital to reduce risky behaviors.
Reality Parties for Parents were created to expose the culture of teen parties and alcohol/drug use to parents and concerned adults. Parents take a tour through a home set up to portray a “typical” teen party where they can see realistic party activities. They will learn how teens in their community learn about parties and how to get away with going to them.
Each tour is immediately followed by a small group discussion involving local officials impacted by risky behaviors of teens.
